Hello Butch,
Last evening (7-9-10), I attended the races at Miller Speedway with relatives. I hadn't been back to the track in over 35 years. Back then, as you know, it was Central Speedway. You can probably tell from my name that my father was Gerald "Red" Hartford. When I was growing up, we spent most of our weekends traveling to Northwest/Valley Speedway in Huron, Central, and several other tracks in eastern/mid SD. Much of his earlier racing career was at Soo Speedway and the track in Mitchell. The Jim Mattnews family was one our our closest friends. This continued after the family moved from Mitchell to Winner, SD in 1966. This move required Dad to stop racing until 1969, when he helped build the Winner track, and restarted his racing career in ernest. You know the results, until he quit for good in 1972, two years before I graduated HS. During last night's race, a patron mentioned the Miller Speedway website. I am very impressed with the work you have done to preserve data from the early years. Thank you very much. BTW, at the races last night, I ran into Del Jury and talked with him for some time. Still a great guy. Next time I am in Winner, I will try to scan some photos from Dad's racing years and email them to you if you would like to have them.
